arizona

Hanna Kutlu

one day

we can get a car and drive away

a speedy little thing with only two seats

we don’t need anybody else anyway

i want to see arizona through your eyes

under a sky with no clouds

i want to trace your purpling knees

and shake out the long-road weariness

far away

from that hospital where our parents work

my blood would spill red like laquer on the sandy roadside

and you could not save me

because we are not doctors

oh and that makes me so happy

i could kiss you

with only the cacti to see

tears for me would be a waste

of water in the desert

however black bitten and salty

and you know it

load my body into that compact

little trunk

and keep on driving my

arizona darling
